Host a coffee tasting at home
Light or dark roast, Ethiopia or Brazil, filter or French press: coffee tastes more different than most people think. A tasting with friends is the quickest way to find out what you actually like.
How to do it
Pick what to compare.
Three to five coffees with one thing changing: beans from different countries, different roasts, or one bean brewed different ways.
Brew them the same way.
Use the same amount of coffee and water and the same brewing time, so the beans are what you taste.
Rate each cup on your own.
One round per coffee. Taste it hot and again as it cools, then give it a score from 1 to 10.
Reveal your favourite.
Turn the cards and see which coffee wins, and who in the group likes it lighter or darker than the rest.
Criteria to try
Pick up to eight. They all count equally.
Good to know
- Taste from small cups and let the coffee cool a little. The flavours show more when it isn’t scalding.
- Serve water and plain crackers between cups.
- Include your everyday coffee. It is a useful benchmark.
Questions and answers
How many coffees should we taste?
Three to five. More than that gets hard to tell apart, and it is a lot of caffeine.
Do we need special equipment?
No. A kettle, a scale and a filter or French press are enough.
What if we don’t know the coffee words?
Pick criteria everyone understands, like “bitter”, “fruity” and “would drink again”. The scores do the rest.
