Host a beer tasting with friends
From pilsner to imperial stout, a beer tasting is an easy excuse to get together. The trick is a good lineup and a fair way to score it.
How to do it
Build a lineup.
Five to eight beers, from light to dark. Pick a style and compare breweries, or let everyone bring one beer they want to defend.
Choose your criteria.
Look, aroma, taste and drinkability work for most beers. Add bitterness if you’re tasting IPAs.
Rate each beer on your own.
Share one beer per round in small glasses. Everyone scores privately before anyone says what they think.
Reveal and compare.
Flip the cards and see who loved the sour everyone else hated. At the end you get a ranking and the group’s favourite.
Criteria to try
Pick up to eight. They all count equally.
Good to know
- Go from low to high alcohol, and from mild to bitter or sour.
- Small glasses keep it fun: 10 cl per person is enough to judge a beer.
- Hide the bottles if you want a blind tasting.
Questions and answers
How many beers for a tasting?
Five to eight is a good number. Share bottles so nobody drinks too much.
What should we eat?
Bread, pretzels, mild cheese or crackers. Avoid strong flavours that drown the beer.
Can we do it over several evenings?
