Jury · One evening
Host a wine tasting at home
A wine tasting doesn’t need a sommelier. It needs a few bottles, a handful of friends and a fair way to find out what everyone really thought. Here is how to set one up in an evening.
How to do it
Pick a theme.
Three to six wines that have something in common: one grape from different countries, one region at different prices, or everyone brings a bottle under a set budget.
Decide what to score.
Choose two to four criteria everyone understands, like aroma, taste and finish. Fewer criteria keep the evening flowing.
Taste and rate on your own.
Pour one wine per round. Everyone rates it from 1 to 10 without talking about the score, so the loudest voice doesn’t set the tone.
Reveal and crown a winner.
Turn the cards over after each wine or save it all for the end. The ranking shows the favourite, and the spread shows where you disagreed most.
Criteria to try
Pick up to eight. They all count equally.
Good to know
- Serve lighter wines before heavier ones, and whites before reds.
- Put out water and plain bread between rounds.
- Hide the price until after the reveal. It keeps the value-for-money score honest.
Questions and answers
How many wines should we taste?
Four to six is plenty for an evening. With more than that, the last wines get less attention.
How much wine per person?
A small pour of about 5 cl per wine is enough to judge it. One bottle covers roughly 15 tastes.
Do we need to know anything about wine?
No. Everyone scores what they like, and the fun is seeing where you agree and where you don’t.
