Find the best mulled wine

Homemade or from a bottle, with rum or without, raisins or not: everyone has an opinion on mulled wine. Put the recipes against each other and let the scores decide.

One evening Mulled wine tasting

How to do it

  1. Choose the contenders.

Three to five versions: a family recipe or two, a shop-bought bottle and perhaps an alcohol-free one.

  2. Keep it warm and anonymous.

Heat each version in its own pot and serve in identical cups labelled A, B and C, so nobody knows whose recipe is whose.

  3. Rate each cup on your own.

Everyone scores from 1 to 10 without commenting. Let the cups cool a little so the taste comes through.

  4. Reveal and crown the recipe.

Turn the cards and find the winner. Then reveal which recipe was which, and let the winner host next year.

Criteria to try

Pick up to eight. They all count equally.

Good to know

  • Mulled wine should never boil: keep it hot, not bubbling.
  • Put out almonds and raisins so everyone can add their own.
  • Include one shop-bought version. It often does better than expected.

Questions and answers

How much mulled wine per person?

A small cup of 5 to 10 cl per version is enough when you taste several.

Can we include alcohol-free versions?

Yes. Make one round per version, and everyone can rate what they drink.

Can we taste it blind?

Yes. Name the rounds by the cup, like “Cup A”, and reveal the recipes after the scores.
