Host a Christmas beer tasting
Every autumn the Christmas beers arrive: dark, spiced, strong and sometimes surprisingly good. Line them up with your friends and find out which one deserves a place in the fridge until New Year.
How to do it
Collect this year’s beers.
Everyone brings one or two Christmas beers. Aim for five to eight, from light and sweet to dark and strong.
Agree on the criteria.
Taste, spice, sweetness and “Christmas feeling” are good places to start. Keep it to three or four.
Rate one beer per round.
Pour small glasses and let everyone rate from 1 to 10 before anyone gives their verdict.
Reveal the Christmas champion.
Turn the cards after each beer or save it for a big finale. The ranking tells you which beer wins this year.
Criteria to try
Pick up to eight. They all count equally.
Good to know
- Start with the lightest beers and end with the strongest.
- Hide the labels if you want to test whether the expensive ones really are better.
- Do it every year and compare the winners.
Questions and answers
When do the Christmas beers come out?
In many countries they reach the shops in late October or early November, so November is the natural time to taste them.
How many beers should we taste?
Five to eight is plenty. Share bottles and use small glasses.
Can we compare with last year?
Yes. Make a new activity each year in the same group, and you can compare the winners.
