Hold a Christmas cookie contest
Gingerbread, shortbread, mince pies: December is full of homemade treats and quiet competition over whose are best. Make it official. Everyone bakes, everyone rates, and the scores decide.
How to do it
Everyone brings a batch.
Agree on a category, like cookies or anything homemade, and ask everyone to bring one kind.
Hide who baked what.
Put the treats on plain plates with a number, so nobody rates their friend instead of the cookie.
Rate each plate on your own.
One round per plate. Everyone scores from 1 to 10, and the comment is a good place to guess the baker.
Crown the Christmas baker.
Turn the cards and find the winner. Then reveal who baked what, and hand the winner a very small trophy.
Criteria to try
Pick up to eight. They all count equally.
Good to know
- Set a rule for shop-bought: allowed, but it has to be confessed afterwards.
- Coffee or tea between plates helps reset the taste.
- Take a photo of each plate. Photo moments are made for this.
Questions and answers
How many kinds can we taste?
Five to eight plates work well. Small pieces keep everyone going to the end.
Should the baker rate their own?
Yes, it keeps the rounds complete. Their score for their own plate is part of the fun.
Can we run it all through December?
Yes. Choose a period from 1 to 24 December and add a round whenever someone brings a batch.
